An escape to Nosy Saba

About 10 km off the west coast of Madagascar, 50 km south of the international airport of Nosy be, accessible by boat and private plane, there is Nosy Saba which literally means "Life is Sweet". The natural environment around this island of 130 hectares offers everything it takes, to fall in love with the beaches, the sea und its underwater space.

During boat trips, you can meet sea turtles approaching land to lay their eggs, or playful dolphins which take fun in accompanying your boat. More than 40 species of birds (parakeets, guinea fowl and wild ducks, herons, ...), butterflies of all kinds and colors, lemurs with blue eyes, 6 species of very rare geckos, 3 species of chameleons, large bats, iguanas… populate this exceptional island – in perfect cohabitation with man.

A primary forest of 12 hectares has been preserved intact, including some ferns older than 600 years, giant trees, hundreds of palm trees, coconut palms, mango trees and filao trees, but also the grasland and ponds gorged with fresh water together constituted a unique natural refugium.

Due to the presence of whale sharks around the island, last month a whale shark research by The Whale Sharks Project, led by Stella Diamant, was carried out near Nosy Saba in Analalava. The project was supported logistically by the eco-lodge Nosy Saba. The research included the collection of data from tourists and operators to measure the social and economic importance of the presence of whale sharks in Nosy Be. Since whale sharks are still not protected in Madagascar, this study hopefully facilitates the future steps.
